Valley Boys' Hoops Pays Back the Blue Devils
The Warriors’ boys’ basketball team gained a measure of revenge against Coginchaug last week by blowing out the Blue Devils 63-43 at home on Senior Night on Feb. 17.
Valley had previously lost at Coginchaug 54-42 in its second game of the season, but this time, the Warriors only committed five turnovers and received gargantuan efforts from senior captains David Bradbury and Chris Jean-Pierre en route to the lopsided victory. Bradbury scored 30 points and dished out six assists and Jean-Pierre put up 20 points with five rebounds, five assists, and two blocks. Valley led 16-12 after one quarter, was up 31-25 at halftime, and then outscored the Blue Devils 18-10 in the third, followed by a 14-8 advantage in the fourth to collect the win. The win moved Kevin Woods’s squad to 14-5 overall and 13-3 in the Shoreline Conference while Coginchaug dipped to 10-8. The Warriors went undefeated at home against conference foes for the regular season.
“We were definitely motivated to get that one back. It was Senior Night and the last time the kids would play a regular season game on our home court and so there were a lot of emotions and they just played really well,” Coach Woods said. “We didn’t turn the ball over. We did a good job of taking care of the ball and we also rebounded well. Coginchaug played a good first half, but we knew we’d be in good shape because we didn’t think they could maintain that pace with us for the entire game. There was no way they could keep up with us with the amount of guys we had playing.”
As part of the pregame Senior Night ceremony, Valley honored its nine seniors in point guard Bradbury and shooting guard Jean-Pierre; along with center Alex Cassells; forwards Justin Cheverier, Hunter Linfesty, Phil Dee, and Brennan Joy; plus guards Evan Smith and DJ Berardis.
“It’s a great group of kids and we will definitely miss them. They’ve had four of the best years as a collective unit and we’ll miss their leadership,” said Woods. “They’re a great group of athletes who are role models for younger kids in the community.”
Next up for Valley is the Shoreline Conference Tournament. The Warriors will host a quarterfinal game on Saturday, Feb. 28. The semis are on Tuesday, March 3 with the title bout at Cross in New Haven at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6.
