11/08/2014 11:00 PMThe North Branford football team routed another opponent, this time making Gilbert/NW Regional its victim in a 62-13 victory. The win moves the T-Birds to 8-1 and keeps them in the No. 7 spot in the Class S State Playoff rankings.
Gilbert/NW Regional scored two touchdowns in the first quarter as Franklin Paxton ran home two 64-yard touchdowns. However, that’s all the North Branford defense would allow.
For the T-Birds, Austin Calamita caught three touchdown passes from quarterback Paul Pastet as Cory Seymour had two touchdown runs, and Shelby Franklin, Christian Iuteri, and Andrew Sarmento each scored on the ground. Franklin added a defensive touchdown, as well, in the second quarter.
To open the scoring, Calamita caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Pastet. Calamita’s score made it 7-6 North Branford before Gilbert/NW Regional scored again to take a 13-7 lead. Franklin then had a 39-yard touchdown run to give North Branford a 14-13 lead that it would never relinquish.
In the second quarter, Seymour scored on runs of 2 and 5 yards before Franklin scooped up a fumble and rumbled home 50 yards for the score to go ahead 34-13 at the half. Calamita then caught touchdown passes of 27 and 42 yards from Pastet before Iuteri had a 40-yard touchdown run and Sarmento scored on a 24-yard scamper in the fourth.
Pastet finished the game 6-of-11 passing for 118 yards and three scores as the team combined for 366 yards on the ground. Iuteri led the way with 112 yards while Franklin had 80. Calamita finished with 99 yards receiving and the three scores.
The defense recorded six sacks and recovered four fumbles with Franklin jumping on three of them.
