07/12/2014 12:00 AMThe North Haven Prep Legion baseball team took a pair of one-run losses this week to fall to 9-9 on the campaign. Post 76 first dropped a 3-2 decision in eight innings to Madison at Bailey Road Field on July 9, followed by taking a 5-4 defeat against the Westport Wreckers at East Shore Field the day after.
Versus Madison, Luca Lawerence pitched six tremendous innings for North Haven with Jake Bencivengo working the final two frames. Bencivengo, Peyton Farina, and Matt Mezzano all had multi-hit games for Post 76.
“We played our best game of the season. A costly base-running blunder and two late errors cost us the game in the seventh and eighth innings,” Coach Chris Farina said. “We need to play a complete game in order to win against the elite teams in the league. Any letdown will cost us the game.”
In the Westport game, CJ DeBridgita turned in his second consecutive great pitching performance and Chris Stevens finished on the mound for North Haven, which struggled to get the big hit.
“A few key errors cost us two runs early in the game and we did not get the bats going at all,” Farina said. “We are struggling to finish games. Once we realize that we cannot lose focus during a full seven innings, we will be more successful. These were our two toughest loses of the season because they are games we should have won.”
