The Guilford football team notched its second victory of the year with a 30-7 road win versus SCC Division II West foe Branford on Oct. 11.

David Knapp led the Indians on the ground with his 161 yards on 22 attempts, while Anthony Pensa topped all receivers with his 49 yards on two catches.

Guilford (2-3; 2-0 SCC Division II West) began the night with a 14-0 command after one quarter thanks to a fumble returned for a score by Jake Lundberg on a Hornets’ bad punt snap and a Knapp 9-yard run to the end zone before Eric Zergiebel scored for two.

The second period saw Joe Nault (6-for-9, 93 yards) and Pensa connect for a 12-yard touchdown reception to put the Indians up 22-0 at halftime after a blocked punt for a safety by Tyler Mulone, while Branford earned its only score on the evening with a rush from 28 yards out in the third.

Nault (11 carries, 42 yards) capped off the night for Guilford with his scamper on a 25-yard dash in that same period, which was followed up with Knapp running for two, as the Indians (380 all-purpose yards) cruised to their second divisional triumph of the campaign.

Ford Linell was Guilford’s leading tackler with eight (7 solo), as Fred Trotta (also 2 receptions for 24 yards) followed him with six. Pensa earned an interception on defense, while Nate Tepley had a sack.

“Our defense stuffed their run game,” said Head Coach Tom Unger. “Linell had another huge game at linebacker with a ton of tackles, great intensity, and led the defense. Nault threw the ball well. Knapp ran hard all night and scored a rushing touchdown with great blocking from the offensive line of Dane Lawrence, Nick Moscato, Tom Stokes, Matt Eckman, Aaron Cowee, Linell, and Trotta.”
