HK Softball Wins Shoreline Title

The HK softball squad won the Shoreline Conference title at Westbrook High School on May 26 by defeating Morgan 3-2 in nine innings.

For the third time in a row, the HK softball squad found itself playing for the Shoreline Conference title and on May 26, the third time proved to be the charm for the top-seeded Cougars as they won their first outright title.

HK defeated second-seeded Morgan 3-2 in dramatic fashion, coming back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game on Caroline Fortuna's two-RBI double in the sixth and then winning the contest in the bottom of the ninth on Meghan Sepega's walk-off hit. All of this after having beaten Hale-Ray earlier in the day in the semifinal.

"I was thinking I just needed a hit and that's all," said a speechless Sepega. "It feels really good-I'm not the top hitter, but I was able to come in and get the winning hit. We earned it-we're a great hitting team and we did it."

Starting pitcher Kirsten Carlson threw for five innings and was responsible for the Huskies gaining a 2-0 lead, but reliever Sierra Samuel came in during the sixth and allowed the Cougars to get back in the game by holding Morgan and that's exactly what HK did.

"I know Class M is very tough, but today was very special and it was our number one goal at the beginning of the year-to get back and win it this year," said Coach Jeff Talbott. "Right from March 19, every day I reminded them of it and they hung in there."
