05/03/2013 12:00 AMThe North Haven golf squad took a big step toward repeating as SCC Oronoque champions by earning a 171-189 victory against division foe Branford at the Hornets’ home course of Pine Orchard Country Club on April 30. The Indians went 8-0 in Stephen Feuring’s initial campaign as head coach last spring and Feuring said repeating as Oronoque champions is his squad’s primary objective this season. North Haven is 3-5 overall and 3-0 in the division.
“The Branford match was one of the first good spring days and everybody enjoyed playing. We play Branford again at our place and then have a match at Alling [Memorial Golf Course] that will be for the division,” said Coach Feuring of his team’s quad-match against East Haven, Cross, and Career at 2:45 p.m. on Monday, May 13. “Our foremost goal is to win the division after going 8-0 last year. We just need to continue to improve and be more consistent.”
Sophomore captain Rasmey Kong shot an ever-par 35 for medalist honors against Branford. Kong earned All-SCC and All-State honors and was North Haven’s Most Valuable Player Award last year and, athough Feuring said he got out to a bit of a slow start, Kong has now been medalist five times this season.
“Rasmey had a growth spurt over the winter and was struggling with his added height, but then he shot a practice round of 32 at Wallingford Country Club and was at even-par against Branford,” Feuring said. “Rasmey has a great short game and is a complete player at age 15 and so I would expect continued strong play the rest of the way this season.”
Kong captains the Indians with senior Tyler Hines, who shot a 42 in the Branford win. Feuring said the tandem is doing a great job of leading the team.
“Rasmey and Tyler have done very well,” he said. “They are a little more vocal and take charge more than last year’s captains and also lead by example.”
Rounding out the scoring column at Pine Orchard were senior Alec Rizzo with a 40 and junior Vin Fasulo with a 45. Fellow junior Ben Rollins shot a 55.
“Halfway through the season, Vin is our most improved player so far,” Feuring said. “He’s learned how to control the ball a little more and not get into trouble as often.”
Later in the week, North Haven dropped a 151-175 decision to Hand at par-34 Madison Country Club. Kong shot a 36 to lead the Indians with Hines (45), Fasulo (46), and Rizzo (48) also scoring and Rollins (52) rounding out the competitors. Juniors Matt Bogart and Antonio DelVecchio are also part of North Haven’s varsity lineup.
