Greenberg's At-Bat Leads to Deal with Orioles
One of the biggest highlights of 2012 in Guilford was Indians' alum Adam Greenberg signing a one-day contact with the Miami Marlins six years after he had been hit in the head by a pitch with the Chicago Cubs in what had been his lone Major League Baseball plate appearance. Although he struck out against the Mets' R.A. Dickey on Oct. 2, the experience paved the way for Greenberg to sign a minor-league deal with the Baltimore Orioles two weeks ago. Greenberg, 31, also played for Israel in the World Baseball Classic qualifying round.
As far as other stories regarding baseball in town, the Guilford Senior Legion team went 8-17, led by right fielder Mike Juliano (.303), outfielder Mike Afeltra (.327, 11 RBI, 14 stolen bases), shortstop Zach Battipaglia, third baseman Ryder Miconi (10 runs), second baseman Matt Brockett, and pitchers Connor McGinley (2 wins, 1.35 ERA), Mike Donlan (1 win), Ryan Fraser (2 wins, 2.72), Andrew Kelly and CJ Anthony (1.63). The coach for Post 48 was Fred Parcespe.
Guilford Junior Legion went 12-9 to make states, where Post 48 beat Orange 1-0 on a squeeze bunt by Ricky Williams before losing to Montville 5-4 in nine innings. Jon Reinecke's squad was guided by third baseman Chris Treiber, third baseman/center fielder Brian Maguire, outfielder Todd Williams, catcher Alex Potocsny, and pitcher Ford Linnell, who went the distance in the Orange win.
