Greenberg Gets Another Shot in 'The Show' with Orioles

The last three months have been a frantic few for former Guilford Indians' All-American baseball player Adam Greenberg. After signing a one-day contract in September for an at-bat with the Miami Marlins, the Branford resident has now inked a minor league deal with the Baltimore Orioles, the organization announced via their Twitter page on Dec. 20.

"I could not be more excited," Greenberg said. "My approach is to make the most of this opportunity. I am so grateful I have another chance to be a part of a Major League Baseball organization. This is going to be an amazing year."

Greenberg, 31, first stepped into the big leagues in 2005, when he was hit in the head by the Marlins' Valerio De Los Santos on the first pitch thrown to him as a member of the Chicago Cubs.

Greenberg returned on Oct. 2 of this year for his one plate appearance with the Marlins against then-Mets' knuckleballer and 2012 National League Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey, who struck out Greenberg swinging on three pitches.

Greenberg, who hadn't been with an MLB organization since 2008, also played for Israel in the qualifying round of the World Baseball Classic earlier this year. According to ESPN.com, he had previously met with Orioles' skipper Buck Showalter, General Manager Dan Duquette, and former Orioles' outfielder Brady Anderson at the winter meetings in Nashville earlier this month.

While at Guilford, Greenberg was a four-time All-State and All-Area player while also being a three-time All-SCC athlete. In three minor league seasons in various MLB farm systems, including the Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Cincinnati Reds, he had a .250 batting average with 11 home runs, 76 RBI, and 166 runs.
