Valley Shore Y Marlins Compete in Age Group Qualifier

The Valley-Shore Y Marlins hosted an Age Group Qualifier meet in their home pool on Nov. 11 against teams from New Haven and East Lyme. The teams were well-matched and delivered many good swims.

Among the top three finishers for the Marlins in the girls 10-U events and all from Madison were Sydney Fratamico (3rd in 50 freestyle, 2nd in 50 breaststroke, 3rd in 100 IM), Madeleine Henderson (3rd in 100 backstroke, 2nd in 100 butterfly), Anna Lang (2nd in both 50 free and 100 IM), and Kayla Mendonca (1st in three events: 200 free, 100 back, and 100 fly). The top three finishers in the boys 10-U and also from Madison were Dan Chen (1st in 100 back, 2nd in 100 IM) and Nathan Thomas (3rd in 50 breast).

In the 11-12 events for the girls, the top three finishers were Elizabeth Beckman of Ivoryton (3rd in 50 free, 2nd in both 200 free and 200 IM), Kimberly Berardis of Deep River (1st in 100 back), Addie Byars (2nd in 200 breast), Anna Daly of Ivoryton (3rd in 100 back), Morgan Leopoldino of Old Saybrook (3rd in 100 fly), Allie Mascia of Madison (2nd in both the 50 free and 100 fly), and Grace Zhou of Guilford (3rd in both the 50 and 200 breast). Swimming in the boys 11-12 events and placing among the top three were Sam Fuchs of Old Lyme (3rd in 50 breast, 3rd in 200 IM), Liam Leavy of Ivoryton (2nd in both the 50 and 200 free and 1st in 50 breast), Bill May of Guilford (3rd in both the 50 free and 100 fly, 2nd in both the 100 back and 50 breast), and Chris Thomson of Old Saybrook (1st in three events: 200 free, 100 fly, and 200 IM).

The top three finishers for the boys 13-14 events were Peter Fuchs of Old Lyme (100 breast), Madison brothers Davide Mendonca (1st in 50 free, 3rd in both 100 breast and 100 fly) and Michael Mendonca (3rd in 50 free), and Mike Healey of Madison (2nd in 100 fly).

Nick Husted of Old Saybrook finished third in the 15-and-over boys' 200 free.

Head Coach Pat Callahan and Assistant Coach Erica Smith seemed pleased with the performances of their swimmers.

Said Smith: "This meet was a great chance to see just where the swimmers are in their conditioning at this point in the season."
