Rams’ Girls’ Soccer Shuts Out Portland and Hale-Ray

On Oct. 23, the Old Saybrook girls' soccer squad defeated Portland 1-0 behind Nicole Valente's goal. Mia Neas had seven saves.

"This game was well-played by both teams in the pouring rain," said Coach Larry Bright. "We played our best game of the season against the top team in our conference. Mia Neas was solid in goal and had several key saves. We caught a break when a deflection bounced to Nicole Valente in the penalty box and she calmly passed the ball passed the keeper to give us the lead in the first half. We were able to create some opportunities in the second half, but were unable to add another goal to cushion our lead. We held off Portland in the closing minutes to notch our third win in a row."

The following day, the Rams shut out Hale-Ray 2-0 with Cori Reid (on an assist by Molly Beck) and Mary Kate Morrison scoring goals. Neas had five saves in net.

"This was a great win coming off an epic win over rival Portland the night before," said Bright. "We were able to keep pressure on the Hale-Ray defense throughout the first half. While we could have scored a couple of goals in the first half, we had trouble finding the back of the net. We were able to score early in the game when Molly Beck pushed a pass through to Cori Reid who was able to beat the keeper. We came out every aggressive in the second half and have a few good shots on goal. Jocelyn Hanley was able to break through the Hale-Ray defense halfway through the second half and was taken down inside the box. Mary Kate converted the penalty kick to give us a 2-0 lead with about 20 minutes to go."
