Hand Football Claims 10th State Title
The Hand football team capped off a perfect 13-0 season with a 34-10 win over New Canaan in the Class L State Championship on Dec. 10 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. Senior tailback Kevin Frey went 70 yards to the house on the Tigers’ first play from scrimmage as the No. 2-seeded Tigers never trailed the No. 5-seeded Rams.
Having the win come over New Canaan was all the sweeter for Hand which has previously lost twice to the Rams in title games, including in last year’s state semifinals. This was the sixth state title of Coach Steve Filippone’s 22-year career as head coach, and 10th in school history.
Frey ended the day with 211 yards on the ground, while senior quarterback Henry Foye threw two scores, one to junior tight end Kyle Anderson and another to senior receiver Nick Vitale. Vitale also added a rushing score and junior fullback Matt Walsh rounded out the scoring with a fourth quarter 1-yard touchdown plunge.
