07/08/2010 12:00 AMThe spring season has wrapped up for the Guilford High School spring 2010 teams. The Indians saw the boys' tennis team win state titles, their athletes honored as some of the best on and off the field, as well as many greats moments throughout the season.
Boys' Lacrosse
The Guilford boys' lacrosse team finished the season 13-7 and earned a berth in the state tournament. The Indians played their best down the stretch, winning nine of their final 13 games.
Guilford defeated Notre Dame in the first round of states with an 8-1 win. The Indians were eliminated by Conard 9-5 in the second round.
Sophomore Sean Gunn lead the Indians with 35 goals, while senior Kevin Gunn notched a team-high 24 assists. Kevin Gunn, Adam Dear, and Joe Depatie were tri-captains as seniors this year and will leave big shoes to fill for the 2011 team. Seven other seniors will also move on including Joe Lisitano, Scott Van Antwerp, Mike Cricchi, Ryan Carlson, Matt Gozzi, Zach Fonicello, and Nick Polastri.
Boys' Golf
The boys' golf team ended the season 14-3-1. The Indians dominated the local competition shooting a team-best 148 against Shelton on May 17. Guilford, however, had troubles with Fairfield Prep, who beat the Indians twice by scores of 145-156 and 154-167.
Baseball
The Indians' baseball team had a bit of a disappointing finish to the season, ending 2010 at 5-15. Guilford did post a 9-0 route of Hillhouse and secured some local bragging rights splitting the season series with rival Hand as the Indians topped the Tigers 11-8 in a home contest on April 19.
Girls' Tennis
Guilford's girls' tennis team hit its stride midway through the year. After starting the year 3-3, the Indians went on to win eight of nine. Unfortunately the run would come to an end as the girls lost their final three games of the season to finish the year at 11-7.
Guilford had some dominating performances against the likes of Jonathan Law, Lyman Hall, West Haven, and East Haven, beating each of those schools 7-0. The Indians also beat Mercy and Shelton 6-1.
Girls' Lacrosse
The Indians ended the season with a 9-7 record, putting them in the SCC tournament and earning them No. 20 seed in the state tournament.
In the SCC tournament, Guilford beat Branford 14-11 in the first round before losing to Chesire 13-8 in the semifinals.
Despite not being a favorite, the Indians made an improbable run to the quarterfinals of the state tournament. First they knocked off the 13-seed, Simsbury, 10-9. For an encore, Guilford took down the fourth-seeded Old Lyme 15-14. Greenwich ended the Indians' run in the quarters with a 20-8 win.
Leading Guilford this season were co-captains Hannah Duggan and Abby Butler. The Indians will also say goodbye to three other seniors, Laura Turcio, Caitlin Van Der Grinten, and Hillary Herr.
"The captains were great leaders that were able to get our team to play together throughout the season," said Guilford Coach Craig Vedrani.
Dara Davis was named the team MVP. Jessica Penman was honored with the Sportsmanship award. Duggan was named the team's best offensive player and Herr was named the best defender. Leigh Rooney was given the Indian Award.
Herr was also named the second team All-SCC, Second Team All-State, and a Scholar-Athlete. Joining Herr on the All-SCC Second Team were Davis and Ellen Kebabian.
The Indians look to improve on their tournament success next season. They will only be losing three starters and should be in the hunt for an SCC championship. Next year, the Fairfield County teams may be pushed out of Guilford's way in states as girls' lacrosse will switch from a division-based format to classes, split into S, M, and L.
