North Cove Yacht Club Posts 2009 Sailing Season Results
For 40 years, the members of North Cove Yacht Club (NCYC) have been on a mission to encourage the sport of yachting and promote the science of seamanship and navigation. The club's 2009 summer season is proof positive that the sport and science are thriving in the waters of Old Saybrook. More people than ever participated in a variety of club activities open to members and non-members alike while the number of regattas hosted by NCYC also increased. On June 27, NCYC hosted the annual Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association's Outer Light Classic Regatta. More than 100 sailors in 21 boats competed in three race classes on marked courses in the Saybrook Breakwater area west of the outer lighthouse. Spinnaker Class I award-winners were
On June 27, NCYC hosted the annual Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association's Outer Light Classic Regatta. More than 100 sailors in 21 boats competed in three race classes on marked courses in the Saybrook Breakwater area west of the outer lighthouse. Spinnaker Class I award-winners were Secret (owner Kuryla), Nobody's Girl (owner McKensey), and Arara (owner Nardella). Spinnaker Class II winners were Wolverine (owner Nauber), Sagacious (owner Noack), and Arabesque (owner Bruno). Canvas Class winners were STRAY CAT (owner Ferrier), Hot Fudge (owner Glassman), and Prism (owner Manghi). After the race, participants and guests The NCYC Junior Sailing Program also celebrated much success this summer with 75 children aged 9 to 15 participating in instructional classes and area regattas. Enrollment is open to any interested child with anonymous scholarship funds available to cover tuition for those in need. Instruction takes place on the waters of North Cove, Old Saybrook, with the most advanced sailors being invited to travel to other yacht clubs to practice their skills and compete in races, sailing small sloops and dinghies.

Participants raced in seven classes on a course set in Long Island Sound from the mouth of the Connecticut River to Westbrook. This was the club's first year of co-hosting this charitable event and further evidence of its growing commitment to promote sailing.
