Picking Up Where Things Left Off, Plus Bond

Finally: Long Wharf was in rehearsal with The Chinese Lady in 2020 when everything shut down. Now we can all see this production that is described as a “whimsical exposé inspired by Afong Moy’s journeyed to and through America.” Moe was a 14-year-old girl who performed in P.T. Barnum shows. The Chinese Lady runs through Sunday, Oct. 31. For tickets, visit LongWharf.org.

Live or On-Demand: Westport Playhouse is giving you the choice for its production of Doubt: A Parable, which runs from Tuesday, Nov. 2 through Saturday, Nov. 20. You may recall the play or the film, which is about the conflict between a young priest and an older nun who is head of the parochial school. She suspects his attention to an African-American student is less than proper, or does she just resent his liberal ideas? David Kennedy is directing the production, the first production on stage live for the playhouse since 2019. For tickets, visit WestportPlayhouse.org. Check the website for audience member protocols.

A New Season: TheaterWorks has announced its 2021-’22 season. The season begins with a strictly virtual piece, Someone Else’s House, through Sunday, Oct. 31. The New York Times called it “a frightening digital coup-de-theatre.” All the other productions will have a live audience and will be available for streaming. For the holidays, Christmas on the Rocks will run from Dec. 2 to 23. Next up is This Bitter Earth, from February 15 to March 20. It’s described as a deep love story that is challenged by divisive political realities. Zoey’s Perfect Wedding by Matthew Lopez, a comedy about every bride’s worst nightmare, runs May 3 to June 5. The season concludes with Hurricane Diane from July 19 to Aug. 21. For subscriptions or tickets, visit TWHartford.org.

Burns & Allen: Ivoryton is closing its season with the delightful one-man show, Say Goodnight, Gracie, in which comedian George Burns recounts stories of his life and career with his co-star and wife, Gracie Allen. R. Bruce Connelly, a Connecticut favorite, stars in the show, which runs from Thursday, Oct. 28 to Sunday, Nov. 21. The subtitle is The Life, Laughter and Love of George Burns and Gracie Allen. For tickets, visit IvorytonPlayhouse.org.

Connecticut Production Recorded: ACT-CT in Ridgefield streamed a production of Stephen Schwartz’s Snapshot: A Musical Songbook last spring. It is a book musical incorporating more than two dozen songs by Schwartz, who wrote Wicked, Pippin, Godspell and other shows. Now, Broadway Records is releasing the world premier recording of the show as ACT-CT did it. It is available now on streaming platforms.

25th Anniversary Farewell Tour: Rent opened 25 years ago, winning the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award. Now, the show is ending its anniversary tour with a visit to the Bushnell in Hartford, Friday, Nov. 5 to Sunday, Nov. 7. Tickets are available at Bushnell.org.

NYC Notes: Daniel Craig will return to New York this spring in a production of Macbeth. Craig has appeared on Broadway in Betrayal and Three Days of Rain (with Hugh Jackman) and off-Broadway as Iago in an acclaimed production of Othello. It will be tough ticket to get. The Broadway League has extended the vaccine requirements through 2021. Audience members must wear masks and provide proof of vaccination or negative test.
