A Community Carol, Re-imagined Dance, A Very Ella Christmas, and More
Hartford Stage: The popular version of A Christmas Carol that sells out at Hartford Stage was canceled, but through Monday, Dec. 21, A Community Carol will stream. It’s free, though donations are requested. This work included returning members of the annual cast, many who live in Connecticut, as well students from Capitol Community College, Breakdancing Shakespeare, the Hartt School at the University of Harford, the Hartford Gay Men’s Chorus, and many others. Registration is required at hartfordstage.org.
Shubert: New Haven’s Shubert Theatre is offering access to several holiday events. Each of these are streaming, and we can assume that the Shubert gets some part of the ticket/access charge. Coming up on Saturday, Dec. 19 is The Hip Hop Nutcracker, which was recorded live at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. It’s the traditional music, sort of, and re-imagined dance. Wednesday, Dec. 23 is Jim Brickman: Comfort and Joy at Home with guests. It’s his annual seasonal concert. Through Sunday, Dec. 27, Eleanor’s Very Merry Christmas Wish–The Musical is aimed at a younger audience. It’s all about a rag doll who lives at the North Pole. Finally, you can purchase access for A Christmas Carol with Jefferson Mays. It streams through Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021. For all of these, go to Shubert.com/shows-events and click on the event you’d like.
Tina Fabrique: This talented woman has performed as Ella Fitzgerald in an acclaimed one-woman show. Now TheaterWorks Hartford is gifting us with Tina in A Very Ella Christmas through Thursday, Dec. 31. She’s accompanied by a jazz trio as she sings a variety of holiday songs. It was filmed on-stage at TheaterWorks Hartford. It is a benefit to support music events at TheaterWorks. For tickets, visit twhartford.org.
Karen Carpenter Concert: Not really Karen Carpenter, but Heidi Kettenring singing Karen Carpenter in a virtual concert called Merry Christmas Darling. Goodspeed is offering access through Sunday, Dec. 27. This is in collaboration with the Artists Lounge Live program from Chicago. To purchase access, visit goodspeed.org.
A Modern Christmas Carol: Branford’s Legacy Theatre is offering access to Estrella Scrooge: A Christmas Carol with a Twist, a new musical with some very experienced Broadway talent. Part of the access charge will benefit the theater. Visit LegacyTheatreCt.org. In this version, Estrella is a modern-day descendent of Ebenezer and a Wall Street tycoon. As usual, she is haunted by three ghosts and discovers the real meaning of Christmas.
