01/08/2020 11:01 PMBruce Molsky, a two-time Grammy-nominated artist on fiddle, banjo, guitar, and song who is regarded by music critics as one of America’s premier fiddling talents, returns to Branford Folk on Saturday, Jan. 11 with his latest collaboration, Molsky’s Mountain Drifters, to kick off the society’s 2020 concert.
The 8 p.m. concert will take place in the auditorium of the First Congregational Church, 1009 Main Street, Branford, on the Branford Green. Tickets are $25 for non-members of the society, $20 for members, and $5 for children 12 years and younger. More information is available at branfordfolk.org.
This will be Molsky’s fourth appearance at Branford Folk. Molsky heads up the Mountain Drifters, which includes emerging young talents Allison de Groot and Stash Wyslouch.
De Groot combines her wide ranging musical virtuosity on banjo with a passion for old-time music and bringing new ideas to old music. She is also performing currently with Tatiana Hargreaves. Boston-based Wyslouch is one of bluegrass’s great young genre-bending pioneers. He got his start as a guitarist in metal rock bands before immersing himself in roots music as a member of The Deadly Gentlemen.
Molsky’s music melds the archaic mountain sounds of Appalachia, the power of blues, and the rhythmic intricacies of traditional African music.
The Branford Folk Music Society is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to presenting traditional folk music in Connecticut. Its second concert on Saturday, Feb. 8 will feature The Johnson Girls, a pioneering all-female ensemble that performs traditional and contemporary sea music.
