The North Haven Garden Club is starting a Junior Gardening Club for the young people around the area who would like to learn about gardening.

The club will begin in late March early April of 2019 and be open all children who are interested in gardening. This program will be modeled after the North Haven Garden Club and be a working club. The program will engage children in hands-on group learning experience designed to promote a love of gardening, develop an appreciation for the environment, and cultivate young minds.

Gardeners will teach methods and techniques for gardening, what it takes to maintain a garden, how to differentiate plants from weeds, how to attract pollinators to the garden, how to plant and maintain a vegetable and or herb garden, how to learn different types of plants and flowers, how to take pictures of the flowers in the gardens, and more.

The children will be working in established gardens around town, and will get a chance to start a new garden from conception to completion. Details such as days, times, and length still need to be worked out and will be completed by spring 2019.

Those who are interested can contact Youth Chair Cindy Golia by email at nhgccindy@yahoo.com.

The National Garden Clubs says, “The purpose of the youth gardening programs is to introduce gardening, conservation, protection of wildlife, recognition of plants, trees and shrubs, and a love and appreciation of nature. The goal is that they will be future citizens who will be responsible and capable with greater self-expression, dignity, integrity, and knowledge of their environment.”

North Haven Garden Club is a member of The Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut Inc., New England Garden Clubs Inc., and The National Garden Clubs Inc.
