Warlight by Michael Ondaatje

The opening sentence pulls the reader right in: “In 1945 our parents went away and left us in the care of two men who may have been criminals.” Just what their parents were doing in the war is a mostly unanswered question, but what the kids did while they were away makes very interesting reading, in the shadowy dimness of wartime London.
