06/14/2018 12:01 AMGertrude Stein once dismissed Oakland, California, saying, “There is no there, there.” After reading this book, I disagree! Through various characters in the story, we come to understand that the term “Native American” isn’t so easily defined. At the Big Oakland Powwow, the climax of the book, these characters overlap—some intentionally and others by chance. This book is intended to make you think. I also felt pain, joy, heartache, and much more.
