Preventing Suicide Subject of Upcoming Talk

Jennifer Evans from Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE) will be speaking Thursday, Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Henry Carter Hull Library 10 Killingworth Turnpike, Clinton, about suicide, the third leading cause of death for young Americans, ages 15 to 24.

SAVE is one of the nation’s first organizations dedicated to the prevention of suicide. Through raising public awareness, educating communities, and equipping people with the right tools, the goal is to save lives. The event and discussion, free and open to all, will include information on the recent 13 Reasons Why Netflix series. For more information, email info@clintonpta.org. September is Suicide Prevention Month and Robyn Sneider of Guilford’s Developmental Assets for Youth (DAY) group says that the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is advising that, to reduce the risk of poisonings, it’s important to secure all types of medications at home, both over-the-counter and prescription.

“For over-the-counter [drugs, DMHAS recommends] keeping only low quantities accessible in a small container that is not easy to access for youth, and locking up larger amounts that can be used to refill the smaller container,” she says.
