Cooking Classes on the Shoreline

Weekend Kitchen, Essex

Weekend Kitchen hosts hands-on cooking classes, with a meal enjoyed at the end of each class in owner’s Nancy Kirkiles-Smith’s Essex home.

Friday, Sept. 30: September Harvest Cooking Class with Chef Jennifer Magrey

Menu includes sage and sweet potato grilled pizza with drizzled brown butter and shaved pecorino; crisp fall salad of red oak lettuce, celery leaves, shaved red onion, shredded carrots, candied pecans, diced pears and gorgonzola with a cranberry dijon dressing; roasted Walden Hill farm-raised, acorn-fed pork loin with butternut and moire pix in a sweet savory sauce; maple chocolate bread pudding with ginger whipped cream.

Saturday Oct. 15: Fall in Burgundy with chef Paul Barron

Menu includes lentil salad with walnuts and goat cheese; beef short ribs braised in red wine with caramelized onions, Snow peas and butternut gnocchi; caramelized pear with vanilla ice cream

Wednesday, Oct. 26: Clean Food for the Holidays and Everyday with Chef Terry Walters

Menu includes cranberry chutney; shaved fennel and pear salad with lemon pistachio dressing, wild rice with sage and orange peel; maple balsamic caramelized brussels sprouts; Everything-But-The-Kitchen-Sink Bark; beet kvass (hands on fermentation to take home).

In November there will be a class on knife skills and a trio of classic cold weather soups, and a Thanksgiving boot camp class. Dates, specifics to be announced on www.weekendkitchenct.com/.

Field House Farm, Madison

Betty Ann Donegan, Branford

Donegan has been offering cooking classes for more than 40 years. She offers cooking cruises to far-flung locations, and a series of seasonally focused classes in Branford. Jacques Pepin Cruise

Oceania Cruises is offering a “culinary sojourn” hosted by internationally acclaimed French chef Jacques Pepin, who now lives in Madison. One cruise departs Nov. 1 from Venice and travels to Rome. Another leaves June 2, 2017, from London and travels to Copenhagen. Pepin will offer lectures, culinary demonstrations, and more. Kitchen at CitySeed

Saturday, Sept. 24, 10:15 a.m. to 2 p.m., Cooking from the Farmer’s Market with Chef Lucas of Junzi Kitchen Kitchen at CitySeed, 817 Grand Avenue, New Haven

Wednesday, Sept. 28, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Packed Lunch—Kids Cooking Class with Parents! Kitchen at CitySeed, 817 Grand Avenue New Haven

Its back to school time and that means that lunches and dinners take on new schedules and flavors for many families. Join Chef Suzanne Beck, from Bloodroot vegetarian restaurant, to help kids and parents prepare veggie-forward lunches and dishes that taste great. Basic knife, kitchen and food preparation skills will be taught. Children and parents will end the class with a sit-down meal together. This class is ideal for children between the ages of 6 and 10.
