Irish Festival Coming to North Haven June 27 and 28
It’s that time again to put your green on! But you don’t have to be Irish to partake in all the family-oriented festivities planned for this annual festival at the North Haven Fairgrounds, Route 5, 300 Washington Avenue. This event, sponsored by the Irish American Community Center, is the longest running Irish festival in New England and, according to organizers, the United States. Each year thousands assemble to participate in a program featuring the finest in Irish music, dance, and sports while enjoying the camaraderie of those with similar interests.
This year is a significant year for the Feis (pronounced “Fesh”) because it is celebrating 50 years of dance competition on Sunday, June 28. If you enjoy watching Riverdance, this event is like watching Riverdance on overload!
There is something for everyone – from shopping in an Irish village, tasting a variety of foods, enjoying beverages in a Irish tea house or Irish pub tent, pony rides for the young, a demonstration of sheep shearing, bagpipes both days, and lots (and lots) of Irish music for your listening and dancing pleasure. Gaelic Youth Irish football games will be held on Saturday and Sunday. A complete schedule of activities and contacts can be found on the festival website, www.ctirishfestival.com, or on the Facebook page “CT Irish Festival.” Saturday starts with a charitable road walk to benefit CFMS (information on website). The festival gates open at noon and close at 11 p.m. on Saturday. Sunday’s events will start with a Catholic Mass at 8:30 a.m. in the main tent. The festival ends at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 per adult each day and admission for children younger than 16 is free. The first 200 paid adults through the entrance gate will receive a festival shirt.
