06/10/2015 03:35 PMThe next meeting of the Madison Happiness Club on Wednesday, June 24 at 7 p.m. at the Scranton Memorial Library, 801 Boston Post Road, Madison, will feature three inspiring speakers who will share how their own, difficult life experiences helped them to not only better themselves, but also to help and inspire others around them and throughout the world.
Nicole Burke will speak about how she was inspired by her lifelong best friend, who is battling cystic fibrosis and runs to stay healthy, to start OutRUN the Odds, a Facebook page with a community of runners who raise awareness about the disease. Fast-forward 14 months post-launch, and the group has ballooned into OutRUN 38, a full-blown charity with more than 5,800 members who’ve logged a collective 350,000 miles and raised $75,000 (and counting) for research.
Melanie DiNicola will speak about how her daughter’s diagnosis of cystic fibrosis turned her life around for the better with the ultimate creation of the CFMS Fund, a non-profit foundation dedicated to raising funds and awareness in the fight against cystic fibrosis and multiple sclerosis.
Lisa Miksis will share how her mother’s 45-year battle with multiple sclerosis inspired her to run the Boston Marathon. Miksis learned from watching her mom, who passed away last year, that a family challenge may be the hand you’re dealt, and you can either let it take you down or you can rise above it. Miksis was the publisher of Shore Publishing Newspapers for 13 years and is now running her family’s business.
