Talking Civil War Heroes
Buck Zaidel, a longtime collector of Civil War objects and images, will present a talk on his recently released publication, Heroes for All Time, at the Acton Public Library, 60 Old Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook, on Thurday, May 21 7 p.m. This event is co-sponsored by the Old Saybrook Historical Society and the Shoreline Civil War Round Table.
Heroes for All Time, co-authored with Dione Longley and published by Weleyan University Press, presents rich account of Civil War experiences from personal letters and diaries along with hundreds of previously unpublished photographs. Written accounts from the Connecticut home front provide additional details about the impact of the Civil War, which claimed some 6,000 Connecticut lives.
Heroes for All Time, according to Diana Ross McCain, head of the Connecticut Historical Society Research Center, “weaves compelling personal accounts and evocative original images with crisp narrative to create a riveting, unforgettable account of Nutmeggers’s Civil War experience from battlefield to home front.”
Zaidel has exhibited at Civil War shows across the country. His artifacts and photographs have been displayed at various museum exhibitions, including the exhibit Photography and the American Civil War at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
