Rules of Civility by Amor Towles

Reviewed and read by many in 2011, it’s still in my top 10 list. It opens at a photography exhibit of Depression-era work by Walker Evans, then backtracks 25 years to Jazz-era, pre-war Manhattan, where class distinctions alter and reveal the complex relationships of Katy Kontent and Tinker Gray. This is beautifully written, a perfect lead-up to the new year.
