Wonder by R.J. Palacio
Be kinder than kind! This was the final message of the novel. Was it possible for Auggie Pullman, a 5th-grader new to middle school, to do this? He is the book’s main character with a gross facial deformity, caused by a gene mutation. The chapters are brief and are narrated by all the people in Auggie’s life—his parents, sister, school chums, and teachers. The author shows how prejudice, bullying, courage, friendship, and determination are exhibited throughout the story. It is a story of firsts for Auggie and several others. An excellent novel for middle-school students, teachers, parents, and all who believe that love within a family can surpass any misfortunes and problems!
