Conversational Singing (17 to Adult): Sing in your "speaking voice" like Ella, Frank, and Tony, with proper breathing, phrasing, and interpretation. Standards, ballads, blues, jazz.
Open Mic (10 to Adult): Perform your favorite songs with keyboard backup. Learn about articulation and diction and get performing tips.
The Beatles Songbook (10 to Adult): Guitar whiz Tim Palmieri leads this fun, interactive class for all instruments and singers. Learn about song structure, harmony, rhythm, phrasing, and lyrics through classic Beatles songs.
Groove Ensemble (13 to Adult): Get down with R&B and funk grooves, with songs by Earth, Wind & Fire, Parliament, and Motown artists.
Afro-Caribbean Dance (14 to Adult): This multi-genre choreography is based on Dunham technique and traditional African and Caribbean folklore dancing, with ballet and modern intertwined.
Zumbatomic (7 to 14): Kids' dance party. Move and groove to a mix of Latin and world music, with simple, easy-to-follow movement patterns and dance games.
Body Percussion (11 to 14): Stamp, clap, slide, and find other interesting ways to make noise with your body and space.
Summertime favorites at NMS include early childhood, music and dance classes, private lessons, ensembles, workshops and play-ins for students at all levels. The Placement Office can help and answer any questions. Also offered is the ever-popular Audubon Arts program for children and teens, five-day music workshops the chance to practice, perform and make new friends while learning from some of Connecticut's most talented professional musicians.
In addition to lessons and classes, NMS's five- and six-week ensembles offer the excitement of playing with others in a collaborative setting. These include high-energy rock, jazz, percussion, and blues groups. For chamber music enthusiasts with sight-reading skills, there are shorter, session-based play-ins.
