His characters are so vivid and well-drawn, especially the ever-present Mike Bowditch and the State of Maine. Here, the plot centers on Mike’s involvement with an attractive mother and her quirky young son. Mike’s inexperience as a game warden is an issue for him, so the mistakes pile up, but his good heart and sharp mind save him in the end.
