Renewal of The Sculpture Mile at Madison

Renewal of The Sculpture Mile at Madison

Press release from The Hollycroft Foundation

The Sculpture Mile at Madison has begun its annual renewal with the installation of a six-foot-tall marble by famed sculptor Anthony Padovano. The 300-pound sculpture, titled Consequential Movement, has been installed at the garden entrance of Liberty Square in front of the Mews of Madison on Boston Post Road.

The work represent a clothed female figure in a downward movement reminiscent of the famous 1912 painting by Marcel Duchamp, Nude Descending a Staircase.

Mews board member Stephen Dowler said following the placing of the figure within the circular hedge at the garden entrance, "We have been hoping that the Mile would come across the Post Road and add another bit of beauty to our complex, but we didn't expect such an important piece of sculpture."

Padovano, a prolific and versatile artist, has 12 solo shows to his credit and has exhibited at such prestigious venues as National Academy of Design, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and Storm King. He has received many honors, including two Prix de Rome awards, and is in numerous collections, including that of the American Academy in Rome, of which he is a Fellow. He has been a regular exhibitor in the Mile at Madison since its beginning over a decade ago.

During the past two years Padovano has shown five works in Madison. His Narcissus, which has become a favorite of visitors to the First Niagara Courtyard, is expected to remain here another year.
