12/27/2022 11:14 AMThe Town of Madison announced on Dec. 22 that former State Representative and current Selectwoman Noreen Kokoruda passed away just before Christmas after a valiant health struggle. Kokoruda’s accomplishments and dedication to the Madison community span more than four decades and this profound loss is being felt by all who knew and respected her.
First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons and the Town of Madison released a statement when the news broke.
“It is with great sadness that I announce today the recent passing of Madison Board of Selectmen member and former State Representative Noreen Kokoruda. Right up until her final days, Noreen was a dedicated public servant who loved this town dearly, serving Madison residents for over 40 years in so many different ways. Her compassion for others, commitment to service, and devotion to her family and friends, is a lasting legacy we can all share and celebrate together as a community. Our sincerest condolences go out to her family during this very difficult time,” Lyons said in a statement.
Lyons added, “In honor of her memory, I am ordering all flags at Madison town facilities to be lowered to half-staff starting at noon today, Dec. 22, and to remain lowered until sunset on the date of interment, which has not yet been determined.”
Kokoruda was a State Representative serving Durham, Madison, and a portion of Guilford for more than a decade starting in 2011. She had also previously served on the Board of Selectmen for 14 years. Kokoruda was a member of numerous town boards and commissions during her years in Madison and, though she lost a 2020 bid for the General Assembly, she won a seat on the Board of Selectmen in 2021 and she served up until her passing.
According to published reports, Kokoruda is survived by her husband Dan, sons Brett and Shane, her daughter-in-laws Jen and Sharon, and five grandchildren.
