Drama Works Theatre present Magpie, a new play by Laura Thoma, on Friday, Sept. 9 Saturday, Sept.10, and Sunday, Sept. 11.

Magpie is an intimate four-person play that explores personal identity, mother-daughter relationships, mental health, the sacrifice of military families, and the toll of unprocessed grief. The play speaks to the struggle of trauma and loss, as well as the power of resilience and process. The storytelling flows from present to past to future, guided by the Therapist’s lamp, which holds the space for Maggie to reclaim and ignite her inner light.

Playwright Laura Thoma is a Guilford resident who has been a theater professional for most of her life. As a new and emerging playwright, she has had her work published internationally and produced locally. Thomas directs this production as well.

The cast includes Raven Dillon, Rachel Babcock, Michael Vernon Davis, and Brian Cunningham. Ali Vicino is the stage manager, assisted by Teresa Fogel, and Will Philbrick is the director of lighting and sound.

Drama Works Theatre was founded by artistic director Ed Wilhelms and moved to its current space in Old Saybrook in the fall of 2019. Wilhems created Drama Works Theatre as a small, intimate off-Broadway type of space. The 48-seat theater is located in Old Saybrook at 323 Boston Post Road.

Magpie will be performed on Friday, Sept. 9 and Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 11 at 3 p.m.
