Yellowjackets’ Swimming Picks Up a Couple of Victories; Football Posts 50-0 Shutout Over Bassick
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The East Haven-Cross-Hillhouse (EH-C-H) girls’ swimming and diving team hosted two meets last week and came away from the slate with a pair of victories. EH-C-H earned wins versus both Branford and West Haven in last week’s action.
On Sept. 27, EH-C-H hosted Branford for a matchup and claimed an 81-69 win against the Hornets at Wilbur Cross High School. Senior Julia Rosado came in first place in the 100 butterfly (1:03.74) and the 100 backstroke (1:04.43) for the Yellowjackets in the victory. Junior Kate Kim finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:40.50) and the 100 breaststroke (1:22.78).
Freshman Maddie Boudreau took first place in the 200 freestyle (2:26.62) and the 500 freestyle (6:35.37) to help the Yellowjackets win the meet. Senior Abby Brooks finished first in the 100 freestyle (1:08.34) for EH-C-H.
The Yellowjackets’ 200 medley relay of Brooks, Kim, Rosado, freshman Diana Melnyk finished in first place (2:13.45). The 200 freestyle relay of senior Michelle Hidalgo, Kim, junior Ivanna Cruz, and Melnyk also claimed first place (2:20.58). EH-C-H’s 400 freestyle relay of Boudreau, Brooks, Lamprea, and Rosado posted the fastest time (4:42.59) in an exhibition event.
Two days later, the Yellowjackets had a home meet against West Haven defeated the Blue Devils by the final score of 86-81. Boudreau swam to first place in the 200 freestyle (2:25.46) and the 500 freestyle (6:32.65) in the victory. Kim finished first in the 200 individual medley at 2:41.60 and also won the 110 breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:18.40. Rosado earned top honors in the 100 butterfly (1:05.69) and the 100 backstroke (1:04.15) for EH-C-H.
Lamprea took first place in the 50 freestyle (32.79) in the win. Brooks placed first in the 100 freestyle (1:09.26) for Head Coach Leanne Boisvert’s team.
The Yellowjackets’ 200 medley relay of Brooks, Kim, Rosado, and Melnyk claimed first place (2:15.09). The 400 freestyle relay of Boudreau, Brooks, Lamprea, and Rosado also found first place (4:35.77) for EH-C-H.
Coach Boisvert additionally noted that Cruz and senior Nicole Irizarry both swam best times in their individual events in win against West Haven.
E-C-H has a road meet versus Guilford at Walsh Intermediate School on Oct. 6 at 3:45 p.m. The Yellowjackets will go on host Branford on Monday, Oct. 10 at 3:45 and then face Foran at Wilbur Cross on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m.
Football
One week after earning its first victory of the season, the East Haven football team hit the gridiron in search of win No. 2 when the Yellowjackets hosted Bassick for a divisional duel on Oct. 1. The Easties claimed a 50-0 win against Bassick in a Saturday morning matchup at East Haven High School to improve their overall record to 2-2 with a mark of 1-0 in SCC Tier 3 this year.
East Haven scored 3 touchdowns during the first quarter and then added 2 more TDs in the second quarter to take a 34-0 halftime advantage over Bassick. Sophomore Nick Bilides put the Yellowjackets on the board by running for a 34-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Sophomore Alex Dombrowski ran in the 2-point conversion to put East Haven up 8-0.
Senior captain quarterback Dom Salato scored on a 2-yard touchdown run later in the first quarter to make it 14-0. Sophomore Rocco D’Amato closed out the period by rushing for a 20-yard TD to give the Easties a 20-0 lead after one.
Bilides broke off a 33-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to increase East Haven’s lead to 26-0. Later in the frame, D’Amato ran for a 16-yard touchdown for the Yellowjackets fifth touchdown of the opening half. Salato tossed the 2-point pass to sophomore Dante Rodriguez to send East Haven to the locker room with a 34-0 lead at the break.
East Haven scored 2 touchdowns in the second half to finish off the lopsided victory. First, D’Amato scampered for a 27-yard score during the third quarter, giving him a trio of touchdowns on the ground. Senior Mateo Caputo ran in the 2-point conversion to make the score 42-0 entering the final period.
In the fourth quarter, senior Liam Hay scored on a 1-yard touchdown run for the Easties’ seventh TD of the game. Senior Garret Benson rushed for the 2-point conversion to put the finishing touches on a 50-0 victory for Head Coach Scott Benoit’s team.
East Haven is playing a SCC Tier 3 road game versus Foran (3-0, 1-0) on Friday, Oct. 7. The contest kicks off at 7 p.m. at Foran High School in Milford.
Girls’ Cross Country
Junior Melania Korenovsky represented the East Haven girls’ cross country program when she competed in the SCC Division Championships last week. The meet took place at the Guilford Fairgrounds on Sept. 29.
Korenovsky participated in the Housatonic/Oronoque meet on behalf of the Yellowjackets. Korenovsky crossed the finish line with a time of 24:28.10 to take 13th place in the Oronoque and finish in 38th place overall for the Easties.
Girls’ Volleyball
The East Haven girls’ volleyball team picked up its second win of the season when the Yellowjackets claimed a road win over Hillhouse last week. East Haven also took a loss to Hamden and then lost to Sacred Heart Academy (SHA) for an overall record of 2-7 on the year.
In its first match of the week, the Yellowjackets hosted Hamden and lost to the Green Dragons by a 3-1 score on Sept. 27. Hamden took the contest by the score of 25-16, 25-12, 15-25, 25-17.
Senior Autumn Clancy recorded 9 digs to go with 3 aces for East Haven in the match. Senior Nicole SanGiovanni had 8 assists and 2 aces, while freshman Emily Putenis chipped in with 2 kills and 1 block for the Yellowjackets.
The following day, East Haven was on the road to face Hillhouse and notched a 3-2 victory for the team’s second win on the year. East Haven rallied for the victory in the 5-set thriller, winning the matchup by the final tally of 25-17, 18-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-11.
Clancy served up 10 aces and punched up 10 digs for the Easties in the win. SanGiovanni dished out 11 assists to go with 6 aces and 5 digs. Sophomore Mia Abely posted 7 kills for Head Coach Craig Brown’s squad in the contest.
Then on Sept. 30, the Yellowjackets took a 3-2 defeat against SHA in a home match at East Haven High School. SHA won the match with set scores of 25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-12.
Sophomore Alexa Heaphy had 9 digs with 6 kills and 5 aces for East Haven in the match. Freshman Kelsey Hinckley posted 8 kills with 1 block, and junior Nicole Brown finished the match with 7 kills for the Yellowjackets.
The Easties are hosting North Haven for a match on Friday, Oct. 7 at 5:15 p.m. After that, the Yellowjackets are playing a road match versus Jonathan Law on Monday, Oct. 10 at 5 p.m., followed by a home contest against Woodland on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 5:15 p.m.
Girls’ Soccer
The East Haven girls’ soccer team notched its first victory of the season when the Yellowjackets posted a 6-0 shutout over Career-Hillhouse last week. East Haven also took a loss to West Haven to put its overall record at 1-8 on the year.
The Yellowjackets kicked off their week by recording a 6-0 win over Career-Hillhouse in a home game on Sept. 27. Sophomore Dalexa Pereanez scored East Haven’s first goal on an assist from senior Gabby Gaetano. Sophomore Hannah Dudley followed by netting an unassisted goal for the Easties to make it 2-0.
Senior Gianna Mendez went on to score 3-straight goals for a hat trick and a 5-0 Yellowjackets’ advantage. Mendez scored her first 2 goals unassisted and then converted her third goal on a helper from fellow senior Sydney Herard.
Sophomore Fatima Magana finished off the 6-0 victory by scoring a goal on Gaetano’s second helper of the game. Junior goalie Jasmin Pinos picked up the win in net for East Haven.
Then on Sept. 30, the Yellowjackets hosted West Haven and dropped a 1-0 decision to the Blue Devils at East Haven High School.
East Haven is hosting Hand on Friday, Oct. 7 at 3:30 p.m. The Yellowjackets will then be back home to face Guilford on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 5:30 p.m.
Boys’ Soccer
The East Haven boys’ soccer team recently played three road games and won one of those contests to move to 2-6 on the season. The Yellowjackets took losses against Notre Dame-West Haven and Foran before topping Career-Hillhouse in last week’s action.
East Haven took an 11-1 defeat to Notre Dame-West Haven in a road game on Sept. 24. Two days later, the Yellowjackets traveled to Milford to face Foran and lost to the Lions by a 5-1 score. Then on Sept. 30, the Easties were back on the road to take on Career-Hillhouse and recorded a 2-0 shutout at Boulevard Field.
The Yellowjackets are hosting Sheehan on Tuesday, Oct. 11. The game begins at 3:45 p.m. at East Haven High School.
