North Haven Girls’ Volleyball Takes 2 of 3; Field Hockey, Girls’ Soccer Both Post a Win
Girls’ Volleyball
The North Haven girls’ volleyball team won two of its three matches last week to improve its record to 3-1 for the 2022 season. The Nighthawks notched wins over Branford and East Haven and also took a loss to Cheshire in last week’s action.
North Haven started off its week by earning a 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-13) road win versus Branford on Sept. 12. Senior Maren Hill had 6 kills with 1 block for North Haven in the victory. Junior Chandler Morris recorded 4 aces and 2 blocks, while sophomore Alyssa DiGiovanna dealt out 5 aces on the night.
Two days later, the Nighthawks hosted Cheshire and lost to the Rams by a 3-1 (25-20, 20-25, 25-22, 25-10) score. Senior Sarah Herrera had 25 assists and 9 digs for North Haven in the match. Senior Kayla Balisiciano posted 13 kills to do with 10 digs, and junior Avery Berney had 6 kills and 8 digs.
Then on Sept. 16, the Nighthawks played a road match against East Haven and claimed a 3-0 (25-8, 25-22, 22-9) victory against the Yellowjackets. Herrera dished out 20 assists to go with 6 aces for North Haven. DiGiovanna finished the match with 5 aces to help the Nighthawks get the win.
Field Hockey
The North Haven field hockey team hit the field to play a trio of games last week. North Haven came away from the week with one victory to put its overall record at 2-3 this season.
North Haven took a 6-0 home loss against Amity on Sept. 12. Then on Sept. 14, the Nighthawks hosted Sacred Heart Academy and were edged out by a 2-1 score at North Haven Middle School. Two days later, North Haven hit the road to face Lyman Hall and triumphed by a 6-1 final in the matchup.
Girls’ Soccer
The North Haven girls’ soccer team had three games on its schedule last week. The Nighthawks came away from the slate with one win to put their record at 3-2 on the young season.
In its first game of the week, North Haven took a 3-0 road loss against West Haven on Sept. 13. Two days later, the Nighthawks faced Foran on the road and took a 3-0 defeat to the Lions. The Nighthawks finished off their week by netting an 8-0 victory over Career-Hillhouse in a home game at North Haven Middle School on Sept. 17.
Boys’ Soccer
The North Haven boys’ soccer squad played a road match versus Foran on Sept. 13. The Nighthawks dropped a 4-1 decision to the Lions to move to 0-2 on the season. Matt Crispi scored the goal for North Haven in the contest
Football
The North Haven football team went up against Notre Dame-West Haven in an SCC Tier 1 clash on Sept. 16. The Nighthawks took a 14-7 loss against the Green Knights at Veterans Field in West Haven to move to 1-1 overall with a divisional record of 0-1.
Following a scoreless first quarter, Notre Dame scored the lone touchdown of the second quarter to take a 6-0 lead into halftime over North Haven in last week’s matchup. The Nighthawks tied the game when senior Sal DeMaio recovered a North Haven fumble in the end zone for a touchdown early in the third quarter. Senior Declan Finkle kicked the extra point to give the Nighthawks a 7-6 edge heading into the final frame.
North Haven held on to its 1-point lead until late into the fourth quarter, but with a little more than 2 minutes left in the game, Notre Dame struck for a 24-yard touchdown pass to take the lead. The Green Knights were successful on the 2-point conversion to make it 14-7, which stood up as the final score.
Senior Jeffrey Karavas carried the ball 13 times for 100 yards for North Haven in last week’s game. Senior Brian Lastomirsky had 4 rushes for 30 yards for the Nighthawks. Junior Adam Pandolfi ran 3 times for 24 yards and also had 2 receptions for 43 yards.
Senior Roby Jayden, junior Cam Thompson, and junior Ryan Brendan each recorded a sack on defense for North Haven against Notre Dame. Thompson and junior Nick Harkins both recovered a fumble, while senior Chayse Mangino forced a fumble for the Nighthawks.
Pandolfi made 12 tackles on defense for North Haven. Lastomirsky and Jayden had 10 tackles apiece. Thompson, senior Dan Thomas, and junior Jake McCreven all made 8 tackles; Brendan, Mangino, and Harkins each had 7 tackles; and senior Michael Masto made 6 tackles for Head Coach Anthony Sagnella’s team.
North Haven returns home to host Platt for a non-conference contest on Friday, Sept. 23. The game is slated to kick off at 7 p.m. under the lights at North Haven Middle School.
