North Haven Diving Into Solar Energy
The town is ramping up its efforts to use solar energy to help offset some of its biggest energy eaters. It started with the installation of solar panels at the end of last year at the former landfill—next up is the town pool.
“After the landfill, the next biggest energy consumer in town is the North Haven swimming pool,” said First Selectman Michael Freda. “Over the next 30 days we will begin the process of studying whether we can convert the pool to solar use.”
Freda said if all goes according to plan, converting the pool to solar use will cut the town’s energy bill at the facility by nearly one-third.
The town has contracted with Greenskies, the same solar power company that did the work with the town and United Illuminating on the landfill project.
The ramping up of solar work on town projects comes at the same time at North Haven is participating in a program to convert residential properties to solar electricity.
Officials said more than 100 homeowners attended the Solarize North Haven program workshop on Jan. 26 at Ridge Road Elementary School.
Residents learned about the program, were introduced to their solar installer, heard about financing options, and had a chance to learn if their house can be converted to solar.
Freda said, “The Town of North Haven is excited to be a part of SolarizeCT. This program offers a new choice for our residents at reduced rates, an opportunity to take control of their energy costs, saving money while using sustainable energy.”
To participate in the benefits offered through the program, residents must sign a contract by May 31. Homeowners who want to get started finding out if their home is good for solar can visit www.solarizect.com/our-towns/north-haven.
