Both H-K Track Teams Take 2nd at Shorelines; Baseball, Softball Lose in Conference Tourney
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ outdoor track team finished as the runner-up at the Shoreline Conference Championship at Old Saybrook on May 23. The Cougars tallied 157 points to finish second to Coginchaug (173).
Dan Schumann finished first in the 800 with a time of 2:00.74 for H-K. The Cougars claimed the top four spots in the 3,200 behind Andrew Meredith (9:57.67), Jonah Spector (10:23.95), Conor McCabe (10:24.32), and Matt Jennings (10:45.53). Colton Lavoie won the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, and teammate Trey Callender was third in the event with a 40-3.
H-K claimed spots 2 through 5 in the 1,600 with Meredith (4:31.89), McCabe (4:38.55), Spector (4:40.27), and Schumann (4:42.11). Matt Jennings was seventh (4:46.24) in the event. The 4x800 relay of Kyle Criscuolo, Seth Freeman, Spector, and Mike Callis placed second (8:33.83); the 4x400 relay of Colin Regan, Criscuolo, Schumann, and Dmytri Mallon was also second (3:34.26); and the 4x100 of Seth Regan, Dalton Modehn, Dmytri Mallon, and Dalton Brown finished third (46.02).
Additionally, Meredith placed third for the 800 (2:03.33) and Callis was eighth (2:07.95), Nate Breiling took fourth for the discus (119-0) with Chase Mack in fifth (110-1), Lavoie in sixth (107-0), and in Wally Sample eighth (102-0). Sample was fourth in the javelin (140-4), Lavoie placed sixth (135-0), and Kevin Doherty finished eighth (125-10). Eamon Sweeney finished fifth for the high jump (5-6), Seth Regan raced to fifth in the 200 (23.68), and Luke Sodergren finished fifth in the 110 hurdles (16.46).
Seth Regan was sixth for the 100 (11.52), Steve Melger took sixth for the triple jump (38-2.5), and Brown came in sixth for the long jump (18-10). Kurt Sodergren finished seventh in the 3,200 (11:02.80) and Christian Uzwiak was eighth (11:07.37). Colin Mack placed eighth in the shot put (38-1.5), and Colin Ellsworth was eighth for the pole vault (11-0).
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Cougars claimed second place at last week’s Shoreline Conference Championship, scoring 112 to place behind Old Saybrook with 185.5.
Veronica Chrzanowski took first place in the long jump (16-6.75) and was the runner-up in the triple jump (34-0), the 100 (12.70), and the 200 (26.74). The 4x800 relay of Emma Anziano, Kelsey D’Amico, Lexie Bouthillier, and Julie Kelly finished second (10:04.13).
Sadie Strom was third for the 100 hurdles (16.91), and Autumn Coady took seventh (17.57). Strom placed third for the 300 hurdles (49.91), while Coady finished fifth (50.70). Ashley Duncanson finished third for the 400 (1:03.33). The 4x400 relay of Elena Boyington, Duncanson, Strom, and Kelly finished third (4:20.49). H-K finished 3-4-5 for the 3,200 behind D’Amico (12:22.98), Anziano (12:28.71), and Meara Bodak (12:33.22).
D’Amico finished fourth in the 1,600 (5:30.56), Anziano took sixth (5:41.97), and Hailey Cassidy placed eighth (6:00.33). Emma Anderson was fourth in the high jump (4-10), Kelly came in fifth for the 800 (2:30.03), Destiny Pendleton was fifth for the discus (76-3), Gabby Wyzykowski took seventh in the shot put (27-9.5), and Reilly Jenkins came in eighth in the javelin (88-0).
Baseball
The Cougars took a defeat to North Branford on the Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinals last week.
Top-seeded H-K faced No. 8 North Branford on May 23 and took a 1-0 loss. Owen Marica had a double and two singles for H-K.
Next up for the Cougars (18-3) is the Class M State Tournament, which opens with a first-round game at home on Tuesday, May 29. The Cougars are the top seed and host No. 32 Rocky Hill (6-14) at 3:30 p.m.
Softball
The Cougars took a 9-1 loss to Coginchaug on May 21 and lost an 11-10 contest against Stafford on May 23 to finish the regular season at 10-10. H-K then won its opening game in the Shoreline Conference Tournament, before taking a defeat versus Hale-Ray in the semifinal round.
The No. 6-seeded Cougars faced No. 3 Coginchaug in a Shoreline quarterfinal and prevailed 2-1 on May 25. H-K grabbed an early lead on an Olivia Whitehead single the fourth inning. After Coginchaug tied the game, Ella McGlynn opened the sixth with a single to left, was bunted to second by Rachel Mauri, and advanced to third on a ground-out. Pinch runner Tori Rich then raced home with the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Brooke LaTouche pitched a three-hitter for the victory.
Facing No. 2 Hale-Ray in the semifinals, the Cougars took a 12-0 loss the following afternoon.
The Cougars (11-11) are competing in the Class M State Tournament as No. 30 seed and will travel to No. 3 Griswold (19-1) for a first-round contest on Tuesday, May 29 at 4 p.m.
Golf
The Cougars completed their regular season with a record of 7-8 and then competed in the Shoreline Conference Championship last week.
H-K lost a 177-193 decision to Coginchaug on May 21. Andrew Kuehn led the Cougars with a round of 43. Oliver Artus shot a 49, as did Ethan Campbell, while Mikey Barile finished with a 52.
The Cougars took a 160-197 loss to Portland on May 22. Kuehn had a score of 46, Artus shot a 48, Greg Lynskey turned in a 50, and Barile shot a 53.
H-K lost a 186-193 contest to Morgan on May 23. Kuehn earned a 47, Artus shot a 48, while Lynskey and Campbell each had a 49
The Cougars then hit the course for the Shoreline Conference Championship at Stanley Golf Course. H-K scored a 390 to finish in seventh place.
Girls’ Tennis
The Cougars concluded their 2018 campaign by dropping a contest to Cromwell last week.
H-K finished its season at 8-12 overall after losing to Cromwell by a 5-2 score on May 21.
