Knapp Scores Four in Football’s Rout of Lyman Hall
After two straight losses, the Guilford football team notched its first victory of the campaign with a 44-0 rout of Lyman Hall on Sept. 27 at home in a SCC Division II West matchup.
The Indians (1-2; 1-0 SCC Division II West) jumped on the Trojans early thanks to touchdown runs of 18, 12, and 3 yards from David Knapp (11 rushes, 115 yards, 4 TDs) in the first quarter, as Guilford went up 21-0 after a period of play.
In the second, the ground attack continued with Eric Zergiebel (3 carries, 25 yards) at the 8:07 mark and Knapp at the 2:34 juncture each scoring from four yards out to give the Indians a 35-0 edge at halftime.
The third quarter saw the Guilford defense get involved with Dan Kronengold earning a safety as 7:16 remained in the period prior to Mike Filley (7 rushes, 39 yards) nailing down a five-yard touchdown scamper in the fourth with 4:50 to go in the contest.
Joe Nault was 3-of-6 with 62 yards through the air, yet he had seven rushes for 77 yards. Ben Fazina also added seven carries and 53 yards to the Guilford rushing game. In the receiving department, Zergiebel was the leader with a 36-yard catch.
“Offensively, Knapp ran really well,” said Head Coach Tom Unger, whose squad finished with 392 all-purpose yards. “Nault ran for a couple of scores and threw the ball really well. Zergiebel had some good catches and runs after catch. He also scored a rushing touchdown.”
Defensively, Derek Battick had a sack, while Mike Hubbell and Tom Stokes combined for another. Ford Linell was the Indians’ leading tackle man with seven and right behind him were Battick (6), along with Knapp, Nault, and Tony Pensa (each with 5).
“The defense played great,” said Unger. “The defensive line of Batick, Dane Lawrence, Hubbell, and Jake Lundberg got a lot of pressure on their quarterback and stuffed the run. Linebackers Linell and Nate Tepley played great. Nault helped lead the secondary in shutting down their pass game.”
The Indians now set their sights on SCC Division I East power West Haven on Friday, Oct. 4 at home at 7 p.m. prior to visiting another divisional rival in Branford on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
