Donald Arthur Armistead, 93, Madison
Donald Arthur Armistead, 93, of Madison, died on April 23. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Young Armistead. Mr. Armistead was born on March 20, 1919 in Auburn, New York, where he lived during his formative years. He attended Cornell University and, locally, worked as a chemist at Olin Matheson in New Haven, and more recently at the CR Gibson Company in Guilford.
Mr. Armistead was a specialist in paints, wood finishes, and anti-freeze formulation. His avocations included geology, archeology, early American industrial technology, and creating models and dioramas around its history. He also enjoyed nature and hiking. He was a past president of the New Haven Mineral Club and was a lifelong member of the Archeological Society of Connecticut, the EAIA, and the Denison and Mayflower Societies. He had also been a Cub and Scout leader in New York and Connecticut.
He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, David and Shirley, Douglas and Anne, Dwight and Betsy; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his sister, Constance Armistead of Deland, Florida.
