Serious MV Accident Results in Assault Charges
Old Saybrook police charged Justin Grebasch, 18, of Old Saybrook with assault, reckless endangerment, and reckless driving on Wednesday, Dec. 23 in connection to an Oct. 31 accident on Route 154.
At 12:40 a.m. on Oct. 31, Old Saybrook Police responded to a serious motor vehicle accident, and first responding officers found debris and car parts littering a large area. Two vehicles were damaged and one was barely recognized as a vehicle.
According to police, Grebasch was operating one of the vehicles and was found to be driving as a high rate of speed heading northbound. He intentionally swerved into the path of an oncoming southbound vehicle, police said. The driver of the other vehicle swerved to avoid the head-on, potentially deadly crash, but despite the effort the vehicles collided and spun out of control. The left rear-tire assembly was ripped from the southbound vehicle while Grebasch's vehicle spun into the woods, striking trees and large rocks. The engine was launched about 40 feet from the car, and Grebash was ejected from the vehicle and landed near the engine. He was flown by Lifestar Helicopter to Hartford Hospital for his injuries.
Three people were injured in the accident. A male and female from one vehicle were transported to Middlesex Medical Center - Shoreline with less serious injuries.
Grebasch is charged with assault in the second degree, assault in the third degree, reckless endangerment in the first degree, reckless driving, and failure to wear a seatbelt. He was released on a $50,000 court set bond and is scheduled to appear in Middletown Superior Court on Jan. 6.
