Guilford Marks Veteran’s Day on Nov. 11
On Veteran’s Day, Sunday Nov. 11, when the clock strikes 11 a.m., nations across the globe will recognize 100 years since the end of the World War I. Guilford officials and volunteers are preparing for event to be held in town on that date to honor all those who served not only in the war to end all wars, but also those that came before and after it.
Beginning at 10:30 a.m. on the Guilford Green, community members are invited to attend a ceremony featuring the national anthem, a discussion of family letters from World War I, comments by veterans, comments from local officials, the Bells of Peace, and more.
In addition, there will also be a table set up with card-making supplies for people to make a card for a veteran. Local historian Tracy Tomaselli said this card/donation program is something she has been involved with for 20 years through the local Children of the American Revolution branch and she is glad to see it come to Guilford.
“During the Veterans Day ceremony last year, Guilford students read thoughtful essays, a project that [State Representative] Sean Scanlon was involved in,” she said. “It was a beautiful addition to the ceremony and I thought that the community children might also like to participate in making cards for veterans. But, it is not only a project that children can be involved in, but adults can also participate.
“Not everyone knows a veteran or knows ways to show their appreciation to veterans,” Tomaselli continued. “This is a simple way to brighten up their day and let them know they’re not forgotten. And, there are local veterans to whom the cards can also be distributed.”
Along with the cards, volunteers will also be collecting donations that will be distributed to the V.A. hospitals in Rocky Hill and West Haven, the Home for the Brave in Bridgeport, to other veterans and similar facilities. Organizers are looking for donations of toiletry supplies including toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, Q-tips, shampoo, powder, mouthwash, hand sanitizer, tissues, and soap as well as socks, gloves, scarfs, canceled postage stamps, puzzles, books, and playing cards.
The event is sponsored by VFW Post 7666 and American Legion Post 48. For more information, contact Larry Santamaria at 203-535-6640 or 203-453-8471.
