North Haven Senior Legion Drops Several Close Games
The North Haven Senior Legion baseball team stands with a record of 2-7 in Zone 2 play after dropping a series of close contests last week. Post 76 was swept in a doubleheader with West Haven by scores of 2-0 and 3-1, after which Charlie Flanagan’s squad took a 2-1 loss to West Haven the next day. North Haven was then edged by East Haven 7-6 on June 26. Following that, Post 76 played a doubleheader against Stratford and split by taking a 6-1 defeat to go with a 3-1 victory. The team then closed the week by dropping a 6-2 decision at Stratford on June 28.
Coach Flanagan said that his team played stellar defense in the three West Haven games, but was unable to get any timely hits. North Haven then struggled on defense against East Haven by committing six errors and then made five in the first Stratford contest. In the 3-1 win over Stratford, Chris Brockett pitched a complete game to get the win, Richie DePalma scored the winning run on a fielder’s choice, and Joe Corniello added an RBI single.
“we did not hit consistently enough in any of the West Haven games, against East Haven we had 11 hits but threw the ball all over the field. In the first game against Stratford, the errors cost us again, in the second Stratford game, Chris brockett did a great job moving his pitches around and hitting spots, we only made 1 error. Bottom line, we beat ourselves in the losses, we need to play a complete 7 inning game at a higher level of concentration and intensity if we are to be successful. We have a lot of games left, we just need to grind out some wins to get us going , we certainly have the players to match up with any team we play, if we eliminate the mental mistakes that lead to physical errors we will be all right.”
