Kong Wins Second Straight Golf State Title
Rasmey Kong successfully defended the Division II golf state championship he won last spring by repeating the feat at this year’s state meet, shooting a four-under-par score of 68 to top the field at Fairview Farms Golf Course in Harwinton on June 11.
Kong—whose 67 last year was the best score in the history of Connecticut high school golf state championships—led wire to wire through 18 holes, besting runner-up Brian Carlson of Hand by four strokes. The Indians placed 12th out of 20 teams and New Canaan and Notre Dame-West Haven were co-champions of the meet.
Kong, a junior captain, had previously posted a one-under-par 70 in winning the individual crown at the SCC Championship at Racebrook Country Club in Orange on May 27. With his showing at states, he qualified for the New England Championship in Keene, New Hampshire on Monday, June 23.
“I’m very proud of Rasmey. I followed him for all 18 holes and have never seen anybody strike the ball so solid for a full round,” said North Haven Head Coach Stephen Feuring. “This should now elevate him to the No. 1 high school player in Connecticut in any division.”
Kong began play on hole 15 and birdied three of his first four holes to take a command he never relinquished. He scored five birdies on the round. Then on the five-par hole 6, Kong sank it in just two strokes for the rare double eagle that put him in the driver’s seat toward his second consecutive state crown.
In terms of the Indians’ performance as a squad, they fared quite well by posting a team total of 344 to finish in 12th place after being seeded 17th. Last year, North Haven shot a 358 and was 16th at the state meet. Along with Kong, contributing to the team’s score were senior Ben Rollins (70th, place, score of 89); senior Matt Bogart (82nd, 93); and senior captain Vin Fasulo (85th, 94). Senior Austin Mahon also competed and finished 97th with a 106.
“I was very happy with our team score,” said Feuring. “I think everybody had a hole or two that they would have liked to have done better on, but for the first time our kids ever played on this course, I was very proud that we came in 12th as a team. We shot about five or six strokes better than our scoring average for the season. It was a great day for the North Haven high school golf program.”
