A type of 11 tribal justice is depicted in this novel set in Morocco when a British couple driving through the desert to attend a hedonistic weekend at the home of 11 friends kills a young man when he steps in front of 11 their car. Laws are arbitrary in this remote location—which is described beautifully, reminiscent of 11 Paul Bowles—and forgiveness can only come from the young man’s father. The desert setting and tribal customs are truly memorable, in contrast with the party, which is proceeding simultaneously.
