Yellowjackets’ Softball Takes Three to Reach Postseason; Both Tennis Squads Win Close Contests
Softball
The East Haven softball squad won three of its four games last week to punch its ticket into the Southern Connecticut Conference and Class M State tournaments, while improving to 10-8 in the process. The Easties routed Branford and then posted two blowouts over Hillhouse to begin last week, followed by a one-run loss to West Haven.
On May 7, East Haven hosted rival Branford defeated the Hornets 16-2. The very next day, the Yellowjackets played a doubleheader against Hillhouse and won both contests in shutout fashion. East Haven won the first game by a 17-0 score and topped Hillhouse 16-0 in the second game. The Easties then took a 5-4 loss at West Haven on May 10 to drop to 5-2 in the SCC Quinnipiac Division. The Yellowjackets have two games left in the regular season, before they kick off postseason play.
Baseball
East Haven won one of its three games last week to put its record at 9-9 with two more games to go in the regular season. The Yellowjackets lost a pair of tight contests and then finished the week with a convincing victory over Xavier.
On May 7, the Yellowjackets took a 4-3 defeat against North Haven. East Haven scored three runs in the third inning, after which the Indians scored all four of their runs in the fourth. Nick Furino got the start on the mound, and then Nate Furino finished the game in relief. Steve Mingione hit a double, while Luis Vega had two hits in the loss.
Following that game, East Haven lost a 4-3 contest versus Foran on May 9. Jack Kabel started on the mound for East Haven. Nate Furino had two hits and two RBI at the dish.
To wrap up the week, East Haven recorded a 15-3 win versus Xavier on May 10. Nate Furino got the win on the mound for the Yellowjackets, who saw Mingione hit a two-run home run, while Tristan Punzo had three hits and four RBI.
Boys’ Tennis
The East Haven boys’ tennis team a close contest versus Law, before taking defeats against Lyman Hall and Branford in last week’s action. The Yellowjackets have a record of 6-12 with two matches remaining in the season.
The week started off great for the Easties, who defeated Law by a 4-3 final on the road on May 7. East Haven swept doubles play as Doug Comesanas and Seth Proto won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles; Luke DelGuidice and Joe Brown prevailed 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles; and Matt Divito and Marchello Delucia won 7-6, 6-4 at No. 3. In singles action, Rob Scalese won his match by a 6-2, 6-1 score at No. 1 singles to help East Haven secure the victory.
On May 8, East Haven took a 6-1 loss to Lyman Hall. Comesanes and Proto won their match by the score of 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 to account for the Yellowjackets’ win.
To close out its week, East Haven dropped a 7-0 decision against Branford on May 10.
Girls’ Tennis
The Yellowjackets claimed a 4-3 win versus Career to go with a pair of defeats last week. East Haven is now 4-13 with three matches left this year.
On May 7, East Haven visited Shelton and took a 5-2 defeat. Following that, the Easties edged Career by a 4-3 final in New Haven on May 9. Jenna Pane won her match by a 6-1, 6-3 score at No. 1 singles, after which the Yellowjackets swept the doubles competition. Autumn Hernandez and Emma Luden won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles; Riya Patel and Kayla Vernon were victorious, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles; and Sophia Angueira and Kelly Wysocki won by default at No. 3 doubles. In other singles action, Nhi Trinh lost 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, Jade Roberts lost 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, and Jianna Clement took a 6-0, 6-1 defeat in the No. 3 singles match.
In their final match of the week, the Yellowjackets took a 7-0 loss at Foran.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
East Haven split its final meet of the regular season when it hosted Career and Amity on May 8. East Haven notched a 134-14 victory over Career, while losing to the Spartans by the final tally of 95-55.
Jay Donaldson took first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.6 seconds and also finished the 200 in 22.6 seconds to take first place. Three other Yellowjackets posted individual wins as Evan Damien won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.9 seconds, Tom Meyerholz won in the 300-meter hurdles at 43.3 seconds, and Calvin Nelson had the best throw in the discus at 112 feet-7 inches. In the 4x100 relay, the team of Donaldson, Jordan Ingram, Meyerholz, and Mike Castllano finished first with a time of 43.9 seconds.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Yellowjackets hosted Career and Amity on May 8 and split the meet to finish the regular season with a record of 4-7. East Haven came away with an 87-33 victory over Career and took a 79-46 loss versus Amity. Freshman Kisha Francois won three individual events for the Yellowjackets. Francois won the 100 with a time of 12.5 seconds, the 200 with a time of 27.0 seconds, and the long jump behind a leap of 15 feet-10.5 inches. Molly Mazzucco was the other winner for East Haven as she eclipsed 4 feet-8 inches in the high jump.
Golf
The Yellowjackets took three defeats last week and now have a mark of 4-9 on the year.
On May 3, East Haven shot a 218 at Farms Country Club and lost to Sheehan, which finished with a score of 176. East Haven then took on Guilford at Madison Country Club on May 7 and lost by a 158-224 score. The next day, the Yellowjackets visited Lyman Hall at Wallingford Country Club and lost by the score of 179-244.
