'Youth Should Vote!' Video Contest for BHS, NBHS Students
April 6, 2016: The League of Women Voters of the East Shore is excited to announce the launch of the "YOUTH SHOULD VOTE!" Student Video Contest. The League is sponsoring this student video contest as part of our "Local Government Initiative", to engage Shoreline residents more fully with their government. The contest will encourage young people to more fully participate in the election process.
The students will create a 30-second Public Service Announcement video intended to get the message out about the importance of voting and making your voice heard. Prizes will be awarded: $150 for top entry; $100 second prize; and $50 third prize.
This video contest is open to any high school student or group of students (grades 9–12) who reside in Branford, North Branford, Guilford or Madison. Contest submissions must be uploaded to YouTube and entry and release forms received by email before midnight, May 1, 2016. Winners will be announced by May 20, 2016. Judges will be members of the League of Women Voters–East Shore.
"The League is interested in involving young citizens in our Democracy. We know that voter registration and voter turnout rates for young people (18 to 29) consistently fall below that of older citizens. In 2014, youth voter turnout fell to its lowest level on record. We hope that this video contest will heighten awareness among Shoreline young citizens," notes Carol Reimers, President, League of Women Voters of the East Shore.
The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of public policy issues, and influences public policy thorough education and advocacy. Membership is open to men and women of all ages.
