Branford Police Charge 2 in Risk of Injury to Minor Incidents
Two men, involved in separate incidents, were both arrest Monday evening for posing a “serious risk” to children in their care
The first incident occurred just after 5:30 p.m. when Timothy Evans Sr., 25, of 6 Brooklawn Circle, New Haven, unexpectedly took his 4-year-old son from the home of the child’s grandmother, who was responsible for the child’s care.
Lieutenant Raymond Dunbar, who was the shift commander, said that Evans pushed the grandmother to the ground and put the child in his car without proper child restraints and speed away. He was located on I-95 by Branford officers and the child was recovered without any injury.
Evans was charged with risk of injury to a child, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, failure to use a child restraint, and third degree assault. He is being held on a $25,000 bond.
The second incident occurred at 9 p.m. when Douglas Trofatter, 22, of 45 Hopson Avenue, Branford confronted and became involved in a fight with another man over a domestic dispute. Trofatter jumped out of a vehicle in a parking lot on West Main Street that contained his 8-month-old child to assault the victim and forgot to set the brake on his vehicle. During the assault the vehicle rolled about 50 feet before it hit another car and came to rest.
Trofatter was charged with risk of injury to a minor and breach of peace. He is being held on a $5,000 bond.
Chief John DeCarlo of the Branford Police Department said that although he is concerned that the incidents have involved young children; he is pleased that neither was injured.
“I can speak not only for myself, but for all of the officers involved in these two incidents last evening, that we are very lucky that the children were not injured during these incidents.”
