Officer Atkinson Named Branford's Youth Detective
Branford Police Chief Kevin Halloran announces Officer David Atkinson has been assigned to the position of Youth Detective effective Monday, Oct. 10, 2016.
The position was previously filled by Detective Arthur Ferris, who has been reassigned to major investigations due to the recent retirement of Detective Daniel Travisano.
Atkinson, a lifelong resident of Branford, has been a Branford Officer for over 19 years. During his time in patrol, Officer Atkinson served as the Department's K-9 Officer for 15 of those years, partnering with three different K-9s. Officer Atkinson and his K-9s were commended on a number of occasions for their dedicated work in improving the quality of life for Branford's residents.
Chief Halloran said that five officers expressed interest in the Youth Detective position, and the selection was difficult due to the high degree of skill and proficiency that each officer possesses.
"Although the selection was difficult, I am highly confident that Detective Atkinson will bring the same level of dedication, professionalism and fortitude to the position of Youth Detective as he demonstrated as our Canine Officer," said Chief Halloran.
Officer Atkinson, who holds a Master's Degree from Boston University, attended Branford Public Schools and served as the Captain of the BHS Varsity Football team in his senior year.
"I'm very honored and excited about my new assignment," said Officer Atkinson. "I have a strong commitment to our youth, our school system and recognize that they are one of our most valuable community assets."
Officer Atkinson and his wife Diane have three children who all attended Branford Schools.
