Mae E. (Ostrom) Salce, 92, Madison
Mae E. (Ostrom) Salce, 92, of Madison, died April 12 surrounded by her loving family and caretakers. She was the loving wife of the late John J. Salce. Mae and John would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past Feb. 14.
Mae was born in Nykoping, Sweden, daughter of the late Gustav Adolf (Larrson) Ostrom and Nancy Olivia Djupstrom Ostrom Shepheard. She was also the beloved stepdaughter of the late Albert R. Shepheard, formerly of New Britain.
Mae was a registered nurse, having graduated from the New Britain Hospital Nursing Program in 1941. She also ably assisted her husband John in founding Hygrade Precision Technologies of Plainville in 1962.
Mae resided in New Britain for 39 years, moving to Kensington and then to Madison in 1991. She had been a winter resident of Marco Island, Florida, for over 30 years.
Mae was a member of The Lutheran Church of Madison. Her happiness in life was her family and friends. "Gram" or "Nonnie" or "Mom" or "Amazing Mazie" was always so proud of her children and grandchildren, serving as mom, mentor, and friend to everyone in her life. Her love of life and the Republican Party will be forever remembered as her remedy to save this wonderful country which she so loved.
Everyone will miss Mae's beautiful smile and sense of humor.
Mae's family is especially grateful to Marieanna Barber, Mae's caretaker, and the many wonderful aides and helpers at the The Hearth at Gardenside in Branford – including Lillian Geraci and Pam Lindsey -- who brought her such joy and happiness. Those card games and bingo games will never be quite the same. The family is also grateful to her most knowledgeable, compassionate doctors and their staffs, Dr. Searle Epstein of Madison, Dr. Jamie Gerber of New Haven, and Dr. David Simon of Guilford. The family is also grateful to Pastor Heide of The Lutheran Church of Madison and the church's many caring and wonderful parishioners, and to Michael Rae who brought beautiful music to her ears and so much joy to her life. The Salce/Cardello families will be eternally grateful for all their time, attention, and caring for Mae.
Mae is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Bob Cardello of Madison; her son, John A. Salce and his partner Wendy Faulkner of Prospect; her sister-in-law, Florine Spendolini of Cape Cod, Massachusetts; her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her grand-dogs. She was predeceased by her brother, Sherda (Larsson) Ostrom.
