John Rogers Westerfield, Jr., 84, Madison, formerly of Avon
John Rogers Westerfield, Jr., 84, husband of Charlotte Westerfield of Madison, died on March 4 in New Haven. He was born on Feb. 1, 1927 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, son of Katharine L. and John R. Westerfield. Raised in Essex Fells, New Jersey, with his sister Katharine, he graduated from The Lawrenceville School and Princeton University, where he obtained a BS degree in chemistry. He served in the U.S. Air Corps during World War II.
John met his wife Charlotte in New Jersey and they were married on June 16, 1950. In the early years of their marriage they lived in many places as John pursued a career with Union Carbide. A highlight for him was starting and coaching the Pee-wee hockey league in Kansas City for his son Jack and horseback riding in Avon with his daughter, Liz. Later, the family settled in Avon, where John retired from Stanley Works.
A passionate and gifted athlete, John competed in tennis, paddle tennis, and golf. He was a Paddle Tennis Seniors National Tennis Champion. John also served on the board of the Farmington River Watershed and volunteered for Habit for Humanity.
Besides his wife and sister, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John R. (Jack) Westerfield III and A. Parker Westerfield of Destin, Florida, and a step-granddaughter, Jane Miller McDonnell and her family of Washington, D.C. He is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Liz Westerfield and Scott Kinnamon and their children Lucy and Ella of Denver, Colorado.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Church in Madison on Tuesday, March 8, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity/Madison Cares, P.O.
