This Black Walnut Makes a 'Stand' as a Branford Notable Tree
This Black Walnut tree, gracefully draped over the market shed outside The Stand Roadside BBQ & Market in Indian Neck, is the latest addition to Branford Community Forest Commission's Branford Notable Trees program.
This tree could easily be a symbol for late summer in Connecticut. With it's dark aromatic leaves, which are very long and dark green, the large tree with it's open, rounded crown looks as if it was made for this site. In late summer, the Black Walnut bears green/brown fruit which measures 1.5 inches to 2.5 inches in diameter.
Black Walnut is also a coveted native hardwood, used for furniture and veneer.
Drive by to take a look at this wonderful specimen, which is easily seen from the road. The Stand is located at 196 South Montowese Street.
The CFC hopes to continue to share photos and information of additional Branford Notable Trees, to help increase public awareness of the importance of the town's trees. To nominate a native notable tree, contact llr26@ymail.com
