Huskies’ Girls’ Hoops Takes Two of Three to Start Season
On Dec. 15, the Morgan girls’ basketball team won its season opener versus North Branford by a 70-59 final at home. The Huskies were led by their seniors as Sami Ashton scored 24 points and added five rebounds with five assists, Josie Sullivan finished with a double-double of 23 points and 13 boards while dishing out five assists, Riley Smith scored 14 and collected five rebounds, and Riley Thompson hauled in 10 rebounds and had seven points in the victory.
In the second game of the season on Dec. 17, Morgan lost a dramatic overtime road game to non-conference foe Hand, 76-70. The Huskies were unable to close the door on the Tigers as Hand rallied from a late-seven point deficit to force the extra period. Then in overtime, the Tigers outscored Morgan 16-10 to close out the game. Ashton led the Huskies with 34 points, seven assists and six rebounds, while Sullivan had her second double-double in as many games with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Smith added eight points and nine boards for Morgan.
Two days later on Dec. 19, Morgan returned home to face Notre Dame-Fairfield and won 51-46. The Huskies led most of the way as they held a 30-18 advantage at the half. The Lancers made a run in the second half, but Morgan fended off the challenge to prevail behind 18 points and five assists from Ashton, 14 points from Sullivan, and 11 from Smith. The Huskies are now 2-1 in the season’s early goings.
